Mobility, Giaconia (Trenitalia): "Trains increasingly green"

Rome, July 3 (Adnkronos) – “Trains are already sustainable means of transport, but we wanted to experience sustainability in an even more incisive way, designing trains that consume less energy and using recyclable materials”. This is what Maria Giaconia, Regional Operations Director of Trenitalia, said at the presentation of the third edition of the 'Eco Festival of sustainable mobility and intelligent cities' which will take place on September 16 and 17, 2025 in the Congress Center in Piazza di Spagna.

The event is designed to take stock of the state of the art of the ecological transition in the mobility of people and goods in our country.

Trenitalia applies the same approach, that is, making something already sustainable even greener, to trains that also used diesel fuel, as Giaconia explains: “They have been redesigned so that they can use biofuel. We work not only on environmental sustainability, but also on social sustainability. In fact, our new trains must be the answer to the cities of the future, because moving better means living better. We have redesigned the accessibility of trains, we have also worked on digitalization, to ensure that people increasingly choose public transport rather than private cars”.

Another important aspect is intermodality, to cover the 'last mile': "The station is not always in the city centre and" to help travellers reach their destination by public transport "we have designed, together with TPL operators, the train and bus combination, which can be purchased on our platforms. We have over 200 connections that allow us to access the most beautiful places. Sustainability also means allowing everyone to reach everywhere in a widespread manner, even in those destinations that are a little less travelled".

“The Eco Festival is an important event for us because it is a place to discuss ideas and projects that are necessary for a change towards sustainability. We are not here just because we are public rail transport operators – Giaconia points out in conclusion – but because we strongly believe in it. This is why we wanted to share this partnership with the Eco Festival”.
